هم میهنان عزیزم، زنان آزادۀ ایرانی،

هشتــم مـاه مارس، «روز جهانـی زن» را صمیمانــه بـه یکایـک شمـا شــادباش می گویم.

این روز یادآور فلسفۀ ساده و در عین حال بسیار مهمی است مبنی بر اینکه جنسیت در برخورداری از حقوق تساوی انسان ها نباید اثر گذار باشد و به هیچ عـذر و بهانه ای نمی توان انسان هایی را که دارای سرنوشتی برابراند از حقوق حقۀ خود محروم کرد. انسان ها آزاد به دنیا می آیند و از ارج انسانی یگانــه ای برخــوردار هستند. از این فلسفۀ ســاده، حقـوق آزادی و برابــری زن و مرد ناشی می شود.

حقوق آزادی بستر مساعدی را به دست می دهد که بذر رشد فکری و بلوغ عقلانی زنان در آن شکوفا می گردد. از اینرو نادانی است که بدلیل ترس از «بی بند و باری» با آن مخالفت شود. دفاع از نقش والای حقوق آزادی زنان است که به اجحافات قرون وسطایی و رسوم زن ستیزِ قبیله ای مسلط بر خانواده و جامعه پایان می دهد.

Reza Pahlavi learned an important lesson from Vaclav Havel: The Cold War opposition only thought they might be successful when Ronald Reagan called Russia an evil empire and triumphantly commanded Mr. Gorbachev to tear down the Berlin Wall. Pahlavi hopes Barack Obama speaks as definitively against to the Iranian regime — he eagerly waits for the president of the United States to say, “Mr. Khomeini, tear down this wall!”

Pahlavi first left his native country of Iran in 1978, when he came to the United States. So he was abroad when political activists took to the streets of Tehran, Isfahan, and every other major Iranian city to protest their “lack of political freedoms” under the Shah. Their grievances with the monarchy hit a fever pitch in the late fall and early winter of 1978, after the Shah imposed martial law and his security forces opened fire on the protesters.

But Pahlavi is not just an ordinary Iranian émigré, he was — or still is, depending on who you ask — the heir to the throne or Iran. And he has been living in exile for the last thirty years in Morocco, Egypt and, now, the United States.

In January 1979, still in the U.S., Pahlavi watched the events unravel in his native country: His father, the Shah of Iran, and his mother, the empress, were forced to flee, clearing the field for Ayatollah Khomeini to seize power. But the Iranian revolutionaries who rallied behind Khomeini naively expected the ayatollah to retire to the holy city of Qom and merely “be a figurehead,” while a secular leader ruled Iran. (Pahlavi quickly notes that the Carter administration made the same miscalculation.) But religion–more precisely, the religion of the ayatollah–soon replaced the monarchy’s place in Iranian society, and many on the streets chanted “allah akbar [God is great].”

 Iranian Shah's Son Voices Support For Green Movement

Reza Pahlavi, the eldest son of the former shah of Iran, says he supports Iran's opposition Green Movement "100 percent," Radio Free Europe / Radio Farda reports.

Pahlavi, 49, spoke to Radio Farda from his home in the United States two days ahead of the 31st anniversary of Iran's Islamic Revolution, which deposed his father in 1979.

Pahlavi said the Green Movement has one important difference from the opposition movement that overthrew his father. He says that in 1979, people only knew what they did not want -- but now people also know what they want.

PARIS -- Reza Pahlavi, whose father, the shah of Iran, was toppled from power 31 years ago, said Thursday the international community must step up its support for Iran's opposition movement and stop focusing on the country's nuclear program.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Pahlavi said nations such as the United States should not "even bother" with a new round of sanctions regarding Iran's nuclear program, if punitive measures merely maintain the status quo.

Instead, he suggested the kind of encouragement that helped end South Africa's apartheid system and influenced the breakup of the Soviet Union.

Pahlavi, 50, said that should include dialogue with Iran's opposition, which has kept up periodic street protests in the country since the disputed June presidential elections despite a fierce crackdown.

He also said the opposition needs outside technological support to beat government eavesdropping and Internet crackdowns in Iran,

and to "stay connected" with the outside world.

Reza Pahlavi was just 17 when his father, the shah, fled the country in 1979. Since then, the former crown prince of Iran has become a thorn in the side of the theocratic regime, particularly after the disputed presidential election last June. With new protests looming, he spoke recently with NEWSWEEK's Jerry Guo.

Excerpts:

Do you have insiders who keep you in the loop on the regime's thinking?

I have lines of contact. Access to information has been very restricted by the regime, but we can affirm the discontent goes well beyond Tehran and the major cities. They didn't have enough manpower to cope with the demonstrations surrounding Ashura [in December]. They had to shuttle security forces from one town to another.

But isn't it commonly assumed that the countryside is more pro-regime?

The regime has completely disregarded its own kind. The crackdown during Ashura, one of the holiest days in Shia Islam, was an unprecedented offense to people's deepest beliefs. So they cannot appeal to their own religious base. Even conservatives realize that by now.

This sounds like we're no longer talking about reform.

The regime is not reformable. We tried it for 20 years. The central issue is to do away with the theocracy. A secular government is a prerequisite to democracy. It's in the best interest of the clerical establishment, too: the sanctity of religion has been most damaged by religious governance. The regime has been presenting everyone secular as anti-religion. The violence has been committed in the name of religion.

Will the regime go quietly when its leaders know their heads will be on the block?

Key elements within law enforcement or the military should consider themselves part of the transition. I look at South Africa as the model, a campaign based on amnesty and national reconciliation. Many elements are stuck in the regime and want out.

Do you see a role for yourself in a new secular government?

*  در آستانه ۲۲ بهمن ماه، سی و يکمين سالگرد انقلاب اسلامی با شما گفتگو می کنيم. در شرايطی که امروز در آن هستيم، چه تفاوتی ميان اين سالگرد و سال های پيش می بينيد؟

اولاً تفاوت عمده امروز با يک جو انقلابی، می توان گفت، در مقايسه با سی سال پيش در اينجا است که اين نيست که مردم چه چيزی را نمی خواهند بلکه علی الخصوص تفاوت عمده اينست که خيلی بيشتر می دانند که در مقابلش چه می خواهند.

 چيزی که سی سال پيش کاملاً تشريح نشده بود ومتاسفانه عواقب آن را هم ديديم. به هر حال فکر می کنم کشور ما امروز آبستن يک سلسله حوادث بسيار مهم است.

*  به اين مفهوم که اين جريان در چه جهتی خواهد رفت و خواسته ديرينه هم ميهنان مان آيا به دست خواهد آمد در نتيجه اين تلاش ها و مبارزات؟

 به اعتقاد من مسئله خيلی عميق تر و فراتر از اين نظام می رود. ما در جستجوی آينده ای هستيم که در آن حاکميت مردم، آزادی، برابری، حکومت قانون، عدالت و تمام مواردی که در اعلاميه حقوق بشر هست که به چنين نظامی دست پيدا کنيم که واقعاً يک دموکراسی راستين در کشورمان داشته باشيم، که قطعاً اين نظام پاسخگوی درخواست ها و انتظارات نيست.

*   پس از انتخابات رياست جمهوری در ايران و اعتراض هايی که به نتايج اين انتخابات شد، جنبشی در ايران شکل گرفت به نام جنبش سبز. شما خودتان را در اين جنبش سبز می بينيد؟

صد در صد. ولی برداشت من از سبز در قالب يک خواسته اساسی جامعه است برای حقوقش، برای حاکميتش، برای آزاديش. جوانان ما که اينقدر شجاعانه دارند در خيابان های ايران کشته می شوند و گلوله می خورند از نيروهای ضربتی، مطمئناً به خاطر يک اصول عميق تر مبارزه می کنند تا فقط نتيجه يک انتخابات. به نظر من خواسته اصلی اکثريت اين جريان رسيدن به يک وضعيتی است ک به اعتقاد من فراتر از اين نظام خواهد رفت.

*  اگر به آينده نگاه کنيم، کسانی که هم اکنون در ايران دستور سرکوب صادر می کنند يا نيروهايی که در سرکوب معترضان شرکت دارند، در آينده، اگر آينده ای برای اين جنبش وجود داشته باشد، اين افراد کجا قرار می گيرند؟

يک حقيقتی را بايد برای شما بيان کنم که اميدوارم هم ميهنانم به اين مهم خوب دقت کنند به خصوص نمايندگان گروه های مختلف انتظامی کشور، منجمله ارتش، سپاه پاسداران و حتی نيروهای بسيج. انتقال اين حکومت به يک حکومت ديگر در قالب يک جريان غيرخصومت آميز، فقط می تواند با شرکت خود اين نيروهای انتظامی انجام شود. راه دوری نرويم.
